When it comes to the question of what watch to buy the answers may differ. Is it just a matter of being luxury or there is indeed a difference between Swiss and non-Swiss-made watches’ quality?

First of all, let us understand which are Swiss Made watches and why world-famous watchmaker companies are intended to have this so desired label on their watches.

As many of you have possibly guessed Swiss Made watches are watches made in Switzerland. However, it’s not quite as simple as you may think. In fact, being “Swiss-Made” does not necessarily mean that a watch is 100% made in Switzerland. Instead, it indicates that the watch meets certain high-quality standards in the form of Swiss trademark law.

So which are those criteria to become a Swiss-Made watch?

Previously, Swiss law established three conditions that had to be fulfilled in order to call a watch “Swiss-made”

  • The movement of the watch was to be Swiss

  • The movement was to be encased in Switzerland

  • The final inspection of a watch was to be conducted by a manufacturer in Switzerland

Meeting all these conditions was quite hard, if not impossible. So…

In 2017, new regulations were developed and represented in order to tighten the law on what makes a “Swiss-made” watch. They are as follows:

  • At least 60% of the whole watch’s production costs must be incurred in Switzerland

  • At least 50% of the value of the movement’s components must be manufactured in Switzerland AND at least 60% of the movement’s manufacture must be conducted in Switzerland

  • The technical design of the watch and its movement must be developed in Switzerland

The new regulations have strengthened the Swiss brand, but there is still room for improvement.

So taking into consideration all the mentioned let's go back to the most important question.
